Children In Harms Way Over Fundraising!

Why Will BigDaddy.com be a Success…

Here's One Good Reason…

We won't ask schools to raise funds in ways that could potentially put YOUR children in harms way.

As I was surfing this weekend, I came across a news story the sent chills all the way to my bones. In El Paso, TX a school was raising funds for a muscular dystrophy charity at a local shopping center but some of the El Paso High students were ducking and dodging traffic on a very busy street to collect donations from motorists.

Although, when asked, the students said they could take care of themselves, all it would have taken for a tragedy to happen was one little slip, or a non-attentive driver.

The on-scene school advisor was nowhere close to what was going on and had no comment for the reporter when asked "Didn't the parents have a right to know what their children were doing?"

Whether or not the school advisor at the shopping center was aware of this activity or even authorized it is not known and is being investigated by the school district, but the point here is this… with BigDaddy.com there will NEVER be a situation where a child is placed in this position.

It's simply a matter of schools encouraging their students to use SearchBigDaddy.com and Local Search on a regular basis to perform all their initial searches online. And… getting their friends, family, neighbors and extended family to do the same. Administrators should consider making the Search Big Daddy search engines or BigDaddy.com the Start Up Screen for every computer in their school so that Advantage Points can be earned by everyone using the computers, as well as matching Advantage Points for the school.

It's simple… easy… and most of all SAFE!

We still have School Sponsorships available for those affiliates that NOT ONLY want to help a local school or their alma mater, but that also wants to earn cash from the sale of advertising on Local Search to businesses that support the same school they sponsor. When YOU become a School Sponsor you will earn 10%.

Also, the School Sponsorship Program is a 2-Tiered program where affiliates that sign up under you and decide to become School Sponsors themselves, will now earn money for YOU TOO! Check it out here.

To watch the short news video on this dangerous fundraising event go to KFOX TV's Video on Demand page. The video was the sixth one down on the left, but just look for the title, "Fundraising in the Streets".

One Parent's Opinion…

I was surfing the web today, like most days when I take 15 minutes to find out what is happening on the World Wide Web, when I came across this blog post.

"The Kid has school pictures next week, lice in her class this week (just what I need) and a school fundraiser. I hate those things. I really do. Pressure on parents to give even more money to the school then we already do. Not to mention taxes here are astronomical. At some point a parent has to say no, but they get these kids by offering dollar store junk as a "prize" for getting money. Now my 9 y/o wants to go door to door asking for money. I don't think so."

Well, as the title above says, thats's "One Parent's Opinion"… or is it? Perhaps not. Here's another "rant" I ran into today on another blog.

"Disclaimer: I am in no way against school fundraising. They need money that people will not willing give up. I understand this. I just don't like fundraisers that instill "values" in our children such as these.

Okay, just a slight rant. Sir Dynamo told me that when they were given the fundraiser packets in gym class, they watched a video. The video displayed all the cool stuff they could get for selling more and more things. Grrr, argh, frargh. I entitled this post with sarcasm, so let me end it on that note: I am so happy that part of our children's hum-drum education is interrupted by capitalist propaganda!"

The way I see it is this… if I can find two parents sharing these kinds of feelings online in just 15 minutes, there are more. And for every one that makes a post, there are probably 10 more that don't dare to say how they feel out loud.

It appears to me that it is time for a change in the way schools look at fundraising and BigDaddy.com is in the right place at the right time.

Read our "How it Works" article and then do one or two things.

First, enroll at BigDaddy.com and choose a school to support immediately. Second, if you really want to support a school become a member of our School Sponsorship Program.

School Newspapers… Dead or Dying?

In her recent article, "BLACK AND WHITE AND FORGOTTEN ALL OVER?" Anna Phillips describes today's tragedy of the high school newspaper. She says that in years past, the issue was that it didn't get read. But at the majority of city high schools today, it doesn't even get produced.

The soaring cost of printing and paper, budget cuts in favor of more traditional school activities or emphasis on curriculum like English and math, staffing changes and in some instances the fact that principals who would rather not have "freedom of the press" happening on their turf, has put an end to a lot of school newspapers.

It is evidenced by the attendance, or lack thereof, at this year's Columbia Scholastic Press Association conference and competition. Since 1925 high school journalists have been attending to learn how to improve their newspapers from peers at schools across the country. In the past upwards of 85 schools from New York City have attended. This year it's more live five or six.

What a shame, that our young people have no outlet to share their thoughts, reflections on life, and their perspective on school events, sports and more at this critical time in their lives.

When BigDaddy.com was on the drawing board one of the things we discussed was an online newsletter or newspaper for each school. After this recent article it appears that it's more important now, than ever, to create an outlet for schools and students where they can share all those things that a traditional school newspaper would allow for.

Programming is underway now to create this new tool for students, parents and faculty where they can create an online newsletter or newspaper visible by all. Faculty advisors will have to be available to review and edit, but BigDaddy.com will provide the tools needed to make this happen if the school wants it. We'll update you as we get closer to launching that part of the BigDaddy.com site.

Watch for some great new changes later in the week.
